Current tanks

At the moment I have 3 fish tanks of varying sizes that I bought with the axolotl's in mind.

The first one I bought was initially going to be for the big axolotl (I have to start naming the big ones soon!) But after keeping it in there for a week I decided to get the minnows which was a very bad idea as one of the minnows became axolotl food on the first night they were together.

I then had to tub the axolotl again so I bought gravel and some drift wood and added some ornaments and some red cherry shrimp and it is now the tank that the 3 babies have gone into.

The next tank I bought was a smaller 20l tank as it was on sale and I thought that it would be ok for the smaller copper axolotl but when I got it home it just looked too small so I changed it to be a Betta tank and last weekend be bought our Betta George!

George is super happy in this tank so I am going to leave him as he is. He did eat the shrimp that were in there with him so I guess they aren't so happy but now he can stay there on his own.

Last weekend I was looking for a bigger tank to house the 2 big axolotls going forwards and I stumbled on the bargain of the century! I got a 4ft by 1ft by 1.5ft tank for £25.

I have filled it up with water and 2 spondge filters and I have been cycling the tank ready to move the axolotl's in next month.

After Christmas I am going to get some sand and drift wood and some hides and set the tank up. I am currently adding the old water from the 2 big axolotls tubs daily to help with the cycling and I added a filter ball to get the filter bacteria started.

I have been looking online and this tank will cfotably hold 3-4 adult axolotls so I am planning to err on the side of caution and out 3 in there. I have bought a screen and plan to split the tank in half for now and have one of the big axolotls on either side of the tank.

I have also had to buy a heater for the tank as the water had gone down to 13 degrees this week as my heating is broken. I put an electric heater under the tank last night and it is up to 20 degrees now so that is better.

The heater arrives tomorrow so I am going to set it up and test over the next couple weeks to try and keep the water at around 17 degrees.

I am starting to think of options for all of the babies as they get older as I have far too many axolotls at the moment to keep all of them. At the last count I had 24 + the egg so that is way to many to keep all of them.

I have been looking around and there are shelving units available that I could keep 3 tanks like the big one I have so I could potentially keep 15 in those if I had to if I got 4ft by 2ft by 2ft tanks instead of the thinner and lower tank I have now.

I am also toying with the idea of using the big tank I have now as a dividing wall in my lounge/ dining room as it is the perfect size to break up the space but not clutter it up too much.

This would mean that I could potentially have 19 axolotls in the lounge with the tank as a wall and 3 tanks on the shelves.

The shelves in my room will fit 2 or 3 2ft breeder tanks on them too as well as George's tank and by up grading the tank that the 2 babies are in I think I could potentially house all the babies if they all survive. Let see how it goes.

That is all a long way off for now anyway.
